sharks fever

there are still so many first times in life. having lived in the bay area for over 16 years, i have never been to a live ice hockey game. the truth is, i have never even watched a full game on television.

clinging on to the winter olympics ice hockey finals fever - the battle between the americans and the canadians - my friends invited me to a sharks game. the teams were the san jose sharks vs. the columbus blue jackets.

what a scene it was arriving at the hp pavillion! almost everyone was wearing the sharks jerseys or sharks colors except us. as soon as we found out seats, the players skated in and the national anthem played. a few of the players from the sharks team actually played for the canandian team at the winter olympics finals, and they were cheered on like heroes by the fans. (hey, but they defeated us though!)

the game was pretty exciting given that i didn't have much knowledge about the rules. our friend stephen tried to explain as much as he can to us, but just watching the action on the ice was entertaining enough~ of course we got to see the inevitable fights on ice too... the referees just let them punch it out for a whole minute!

the three periods ended as quick as a flash light, and luckily the sharks turned the lead over and won 2 to 1. thanks anne, stephen and frank (he just disappeared during intermission so sharkie got into the pic in his place... ^^) for taking me to my first ever ice hockey game! not only was it fun, i also learned one new thing... that the ice resurfacing machine is called a zamboni!

"en" izakaya

recently, more and more izakaya (drinking places that serves japanese tapas) are opening up in the bay area. the latest one is located in "korea town" in santa clara.

the restaurant has a simple two letter name: en ~縁~

there were probably over 60 items listed on the menu and everything sounded appealing. picking out a selective few was a dilemma. first came the spinach salad with grilled pork belly (豚バラほうれん草サラダ), fried chicken cartilage (鳥軟骨の唐揚げ) ←must try!, and the scallop cream croquette (ホタテのクリームコロッケ).

then came a more homestyle cooking dish - stewed pork (豚の角煮). it wasn't my favorite and could have a bit more flavor...

the kinki fish cooked in soy sauce (キンキ煮付け) was a pleasant surprise~

and here comes the night's favorites and best choices...
fresh boston amaebi (ボストン甘エビの刺身) and uni fried rice (うにの焼き飯)!

the boston amaebi was listed as a tonight's special and it definitely hit the mark ★

i highly recommend the uni fried rice ♥
the rice wasn't quite fried (like chinese style) but just plain rice on a stone pot (similar to bibimbap). drizzle soy sauce over and eat along with the ikura and barely-cooked egg was heaven!

"en" will definitely be added to my favorite restaurants list. too bad it doesn't have the japanese style hamburger steak that "gochi" carries, but i guess there are still many other items to try out!

quality seafood

i first heard about quality seafood from my sister. it is basically a seafood market in redondo beach (near los angeles) which can also prepare your seafood right on the spot. quality seafood is famous for having fresh uni... yes, fresh from the tank and served in its prickly shell. i was in southern cal a few weekends ago so i asked my friends to take me there.

the oyster and clam bar
more than a dozen types of fresh oysters to choose from and shucked open on the spot

once you've decided how many oysters to get, you can also mix and match the oyster types, so if you really want, you can pick one of each!

we had a mix of smaller oysters and the big, fat ones too. big, fat ones were awesome!

steamed prawns in garlic butter sauce - gotta say the boiling crab had a tastier sauce

it's uni's turn... the pricks were still moving when we got it

i'm normally not a uni person at sushi restaurants, but fresh uni is a different story. although i can still only eat one sea urchin (about 5 huge pieces of uni) at one sitting.
btw, i've always thought uni is the brain part, but it's actually the roe of the sea urchin...

thanks to D and A for taking me there and finally feeling satisfied

midnight shopping @black friday

i am never a person who would get up early to go shopping on 'black friday', no matter how cheap the things get discounted.

this year, i decided to give it a try. not to get up early, but to stay up and go shop starting at midnight. the gilroy premium outlets have been organizing their midnight shopping event for the past few thanksgiving black fridays. all participating stores open doors at midnight through 10pm the next day.

don't assume that no one will shop through the night.
there were lots of people.

the line outside of the coach store at 12:00am... the end of the line is already on the other end of the plaza!

overall, the stores were only slightly more crowded compared to a regular weekend. i was disappointed the discounts were not that great of a deal though. the sales were what you'd normally expect from the outlets.

2:39am - our first victim of the night... fighting to stay awake

mcdonalds was the ONLY food place open and it was crazy inside!

3:20am - the most crowded mcdonalds i've ever been

3:39am - our mcmuffins, hash browns, coffee and juice - finally after the longest fast food wait

5:13am - mission accomplished and homeward bound

surprisingly, staying up all night wasn't so bad and the experience was not negative either. but maybe having this experience once was enough...

cosplay

halloween for little kids is all about the trick or treating.
halloween for adults is mainly about the partying, drinking, and cosplay.

we had a costume contest at our office's halloween party. let's look at some amazing finalists.

umm... i really don't know where these characters are from, but they sure were in character

happy 1st birthday

i was invited to a friend's housewarming party / his daughter's 1st birthday party a few weeks ago. it was also my first time celebrating korean style.

they had yummy korean kalbi bbq, japchae, and korean rice cake. when it was time for the birthday cake, little na-yeh changed into a super cute korean dress (i think it's called hanbok).

an nyoung ha seh yo~

na-yeh confused...
"who are all those paparazzi and why is everyone singing to me?"

also saw johann - last time i saw him, he was only a few months old, but now he's singing and running around!

na-yeh and johann are both big sister- and big brother- to be! congrats!

mid-autumn feast

a few weekends ago, we had some family over for a mid-autumn festival feast. it was a good meal and we all had a good time catching up. as we were close to serving dinner, we almost panicked because mom forgot to cook rice!! she was busy with preparing her dishes that she slipped her mind... but luckily she has a super quick rice cooker! :P

of course we had the traditional moon cake for dessert...
and also auntie's homemade "ice moon cake" 冰皮月餅!

another touching love ballad by one of my favorite artistes...
ken hirai.

his comment on making this song...
"this can possibly be the most straightforward ballad in my music history. no matter how hard times are, no matter how brittle things may become, it is wonderful that someone can love a person so much."

long time no see

it's been over a year since i've seen C & T.
they were in town a couple weeks ago and we finally met up to have their favorite chinese dim sum brunch. we tried a new place and luckily, it was good! i'm glad they enjoyed the food as much as i did (they said there're none in san diego...). thanks for sharing a nice afternoon with me and all the catching up! i promise i will visit SD soon!

a few days after that, i got to have dinner with my little friend Addison! she was so sweet and asked me to sit next to her as soon as i arrived! (sorry daddy J you had to move) compared to the last time i saw her in january, she's very social and conversing in full sentences now. she's so goofy too!

"haa~~ii!"

during dinner, Addi wanted to show off her photography talent and snapped some pictures. she captured daddy J and auntie M being silly, her little feet, my arm, and a conversation between big bird and cookie monster. :)

cooking fish

the culinary centers at the whole foods market have been offering simple and affordable cooking classes for many years. take a 2.5-hour cooking fish class as an example, it's only US$15 and you get to learn up to 4 dishes and EAT all 4 dishes. the best part -- no cleaning up a messy kitchen afterwards!
