weekend @kobe

last week was お盆 (o-bon) festival, where the japanese usually return to their hometown and pay their respect to the spirits of the dead. well, the younger generation uses it as a chance to enjoy a long weekend.

during this long weekend holiday, we went to see a movie at kobe. the cinema is a fairly new one - very nicely decorated and clean. seats are quite roomy and comfortable. kids even get booster cushions if they're too short to see the screen. however, the price you pay for a ticket is also quite "nice"... an adult ticket costs ¥1,800...

after the movie, we went to the kobe mosaic, an outdoor shopping and dining venue next to the kobe port. there are a lot of cute little stores and it's a great place to hang out. a lot of people bring their pups for a stroll as well.

the ferris wheel is one of the main attractions

you can get a wonderful view of the port tower and the marine museum

proud to be chinese!...?

in my previous entry, i said that i wasn't able to watch the opening ceremony on youtube. i tried again by searching in chinese, and finally saw clips from the chinese broadcasting stations.

it was a spectacular show, with credits going to both the production team and the performers. china showed the world that it has evolved and has pushed itself towards modernity. the performers' team work was amazing as well.

i truly felt proud to be chinese after watching the ceremony!

however, days after the opening, "secrets" of the production began to reveal.
first, it was the "fake" footprint fireworks. although they did have the real fireworks during the ceremony, the aerial shots were actually processed with special effects. the officials responded saying that it would've been out of their safety measures if they sent a helicopter over the fireworks. i can understand that.

but the second "fake" was just wrong...
the girl on the left of this picture represented the whole chinese population singing a patriotic song. she immediately claimed her fame from her sweet, angelic voice. little did we know that she was just lip-synching to the "perfect voice" of another girl (right picture), who didn't get picked to perform at the ceremony because she didn't have the "perfect face". the officials reasoning was "the child on the screen should be flawless in image, in her internal feelings, and in her expression", and that it was for "the national interest".

i just feel really bad for the girl who had a great voice but just couldn't make it because her face wasn't "picture-perfect". let's hope there's no more "fakes" to unfold...

hot hot hot...

hey folks, i'm back in japan...

the moment i stepped out of the plane and onto the jetway, i felt the intolerable heat and for one second, thought if i could take the same flight back to SF... seriously, i was wearing a sweater when i left SFO and i wish i could take all my clothes off upon arriving japan! (ok, just kidding about taking my clothes off...)

well, i guess the heat will help me sweat and shed some of the toxins... i had the AC on almost 24/7 at home because it's just unbearable not to turn it on... alright alright, i know i'm killing the earth but there's nothing else i can do... i just have to get used to the climate soon... :(

i went to town today and saw a few of these scattered at different places. can you tell what they are?

they're huge ice blocks that are supposed to help cool down the air and let people cool off their hands. see all the kids having fun with it? it's definitely a great and pretty idea, but i don't think it helped a bit... it's still hot as hell... i'm surprised the ice blocks wasn't melting as fast as they should...

also, i missed the olympics opening ceremony which everyone was raving about because i was on the plane... tried to watch on youtube but most of the clips have been removed due to "copyright violation"... (T_T) i did watch those swimming heats, but the more i watch it, the more i want to jump into the pool... ok, i'll shut up about how hot it is now...
