europe: day 8

JANUARY 1, 2008
LONDON

happy new year! a brand new start... bright and early.
the trip had been like a whirlwind and i couldn't believe the last day's here already...

we traveled across the english channel to london by eurostar. to me, the eurostar and the shinkansen in japan were quite similar, except that the shinkansen platforms sold super delicious obento but the eurostar didn't. :P

a travel tip: it's not really a superb idea to tour on jan 1st, since a lot of things run irregularly - shops closed, roads blocked, transportation limited.

our original itinerary in london was altered due to many road changes. the bus couldn't stop at many spots that we were supposed to visit, such as buckingham palace, so we spent most of our sight-seeing ON the bus. luckily, we had a hardworking and kind driver, ian (mario didn't cross the english channel with us) who flexibly changed plans a little and drove us to windsor castle. would we meet the queen?

outside windsor castle

it was said that each year on the queen's birthday, it's tradition for her to walk from beginning to end on the long walk, which symbolized longevity. but as the queen aged, walking was substituted by a horse carriage ride.

no luck with her majesty

but met prince william......... 's postcard!

as it got dark, we drove back to the city center, had dinner, and did a very quick drive-around-town. we flashed by palace of westminster, big ben, downing street, buckingham palace, scotland yard, harrods, and crossed the london bridge above the river thames... all in 45 minutes! what a speedy tour~

well, this concludes my voyage in europe. i had a memorable time and will definitely go back, perhaps explore other countries too. but will i join another of these tours? maybe the day when i become a chinatown lady myself... hahaha!

mr. guard salutes... until next time, europe!
